Markarian's Chain is an awe-inspiring cluster of galaxies in Virgo. The field includes many "smaller" galaxies (in angular size), as the advanced plate-solved image reveals.

On the lower right in this image, Messier 87 is a supergiant elliptical galaxy, one of the largest and brightest in our local group. M87 is also famous for its black hole, the first one ever imaged. While amateur telescopes are not able to capture an image of the black hole, a super-color saturated closeup reveals the relativistic jet of material spewing forth from the disk of material surrounding and soon entering the black hole, moving at nearly the speed of light!

Toward the center of the chain are a pair of interacting galaxies, NGC 4435 and 4438. The gravitational pull of NGC 4438 is warping the shape of 4435 and pulling the tidal tail in its direction.

The data for this image was acquired over 18 nights between January 2021 and January 2022. I also acquired Luminance filter data but it added nothing to the final result so was not included in processing.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
